Is this car ULEZ-compliant?

London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (and Clean Air Zones in other cities) charge older, dirtier cars a daily fee. Compliance comes down to one thing: the engine’s Euro emissions standard.

What makes a car compliant?

Petrol — Euro 4 or newer

Almost all petrol cars registered from January 2006 are compliant. Many from 2002 onward also pass. The standard is about the engine, not the badge.

Diesel — Euro 6 or newer

Diesels need Euro 6 — broadly those registered from September 2015. A pre-2015 diesel is the classic car that gets caught by the charge.

Hybrid & electric

Petrol hybrids follow the petrol rule (almost always compliant). Fully electric cars are zero-emission and always exempt.

What it costs if a car isn’t compliant

London ULEZ is £12.50 a day — that’s ~£87/week or £4,500/year for a daily driver. Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield and other Clean Air Zones run similar schemes. For a dealer, a non-compliant car is a smaller buyer pool in any city with a zone — it can sit longer and sell for less.

How do you know if it's compliant?

When we have the car's reg we read its Euro status straight from DVLA — that's definitive. On an auction listing without a plate we estimate from fuel and registration year (petrol ≈2006+, diesel ≈2016+), shown as 'likely'.

Does ULEZ only apply in London?

ULEZ is London, but the same idea runs as 'Clean Air Zones' in Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, Bradford and more — most charge non-compliant cars to enter. The Euro-standard rule is broadly the same.

Can I make an older car compliant?

Not really — compliance is fixed by the engine's Euro rating. Some owners retrofit, but it's rarely worth it. For buying, it's simpler to choose a petrol from ~2006+ or a diesel from late 2015+.

Is a compliant car worth more?

In any city with a zone, yes — the buyer pool is bigger and the car turns faster. A non-compliant diesel is the classic 'cheap to buy, slow to sell' trap.
